Details:

The Akolkolex River surges through a deep gorge over a crashing series of falls. The elevation loss is 118 meters between the dam at the head of the gorge and the Columbia River below, according to the figures quoted by the hydroauthority.

Photography Notes:

Try and shoot the falls on an overcast day. If you shoot during a sunny day, like I did, you'll have a myriad of lighting problems. The middle tier is clearly exposed, but the only view is from a narrow rock promontory, not for the faint of heart, the remaining falls offer only partially obstructed views. Further exploration is possible for people who are comfortable in risky off-trail travel. Focal lengths in the range of 28-105mm should do the trick here.

 

Directions:

The falls are about 24 km south of Revelstoke on the east side of Upper Arrow Lake. You'll need to take the Akolkolex Road for about 18 km, and turn off to the right, just before you cross the Akolkolex river. There is a fairly obvious and worn trail towards the falls.
